Classes and Course Schedule

 

Our cosmetology program incorporates a total of 1500 hours of intensive hands on training. The program is divided into three courses: New Talent, Designer I and Designer II. Upon completion of all three courses, you will be prepared to take the Kansas State Board written and practical exam, and enter a new world of opportunity.

 

Z Hair Academy is a selective school, a pre-enrollment interview is required.

 

The interview is comparable to a job interview. We want to know more about you, your reasons for entering this industry, and your plans for the future. It includes a tour of the facilities, an overview of policies and procedures, and an opportunity for questions.

 

Upon completion of all requirements and acceptance into the program, a $150.00 non-refundable registration fee is required to hold your space.

New Talent - 320 hours

 
This program is our introduction to the world of cosmetology. The course includes theory and skill building in professional image, communication and in all areas of cosmetology including hair, skin, and nail care. Information is provided through lecture and demonstration. Practical applications will be performed on mannequins, other students and models. A final written and practical exam will be given to measure satisfactory progress.

 

Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate positive relations and a professional attitude
  • Demonstrate the correct procedures of sanitation and infection control
  • Demonstrate the proper methods of draping
  • Perform the correct procedures for hair services including:
    a. Shampooing, Hair Design & Long Hair Design
    b. Texture Services (i.e. Perms, Thermal Straighteners & Relaxers)
    c.  Hair coloring & Lightening
  • Perform basic haircuts using the shears, razor and clipper
  • Demonstrate the ability to style hair using the blow dryer, curling iron and flat iron
  • Perform a basic facial
  • Perform nail services
  • Demonstrate state board applications
  • Continue in the Designer I course

New Talent Classroom Schedule: Tuesday - Friday 9AM to 5PM.

 

Designer I - 680 hours


This program provides continuing instruction, in the classroom and studio floor, in professionalism and communication, hair cutting techniques, chemical hair services, hair design, skin and nail care services. This program also prepares the student for the Kansas State Board written exam upon completion of 1000 hours. Upon completion of this course, the student is prepared to take the Designer II course.

 

Course Objectives

  • Review concepts of hair design, hair cutting, and chemical services
  • Build confidence in technical abilities
  • Perform client consultations and make decisions based on the client's wants and needs
  • Determine appropriate cutting method and tools needed to achieved desired look
  • Demonstrate the correct procedures for applying hair color, hair lighteners, permanent waves and chemical relaxers
  • Explain and apply the principles of color theory
  • Demonstrate safety and sanitation in all applications
  • Recognize diseases and disorders of the hair, scalp, skin and nails and know which may be handled in a salon and which should be referred to a physician
  • Understand the importance of retail and promotions and how to recommend products for home maintenance
  • Continue to build skill in personal relations with co-workers and the public
  • Perform the State Board written exam
  • Upon completion the student is prepared for the Designer II course

Designer I Classroom schedule: Tuesday - Saturday 9AM to 5PM, choosing Tuesday or Thursday for 11AM - 8PM

 

Designer II - 500 hours


Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be prepared for the Kansas State board practical exam. The student will be able to follow the laws pertaining to the Kansas Board of Cosmetology. In addition, the student will learn the techniques for building a business. Write a resume and practice interviewing skills. The student will have acquired the skills necessary to fulfill a position in the field of cosmetology.

 

Course Objectives

  • Identify and follow the laws pertaining to the Kansas State Board of Cosmetology
  • Demonstrate competency with all tasks necessary to pass the practical exam
  • Manage time to provide efficient client service
  • Understand and perform more advanced hair cutting techniques using a variety of tools
  • Continue building technical skills in hair, skin and nail services
  • Demonstrate the ability to retail effectively according to the needs of the client
  • Name and describe the types of salon ownership and the business skills necessary to operate a salon
  • Write an achievement-oriented resume
  • Be prepared to complete an effective employment interview
  • Understand the importance of continuing education


Designer II Classroom schedule: Tuesday - Saturday 9AM to 5PM, choosing Tuesday or Thursday for 11AM - 8PM
