Get to know Z Hair Academy founder, Ron McKenzie!

How long have you been in the cosmetology industry?

I’ve been in cosmetology for 43 years.

What inspired you to get into the hair and beauty industry?

My father was a hair stylist. After I had knee surgery, I thought I would try it out until I could figure out what I really wanted to do as a career. I loved the freedom it gave me and the chance to meet so many different people.

What inspired you to start Z Hair Academy?

I’ve always owned my own business. I’m not a good employee because I like to do things my own way! After going through different parts of my career as an educator and a stage artist, I realized I enjoyed teaching more than working behind the chair. Plus, I always wanted to be a coach so teaching kind of fills that void.

What is the best thing about working at Z Hair Academy?

I love seeing students growing into competent young stylists right before our eyes! It’s also great to speak to our customers and see them smile. And last but not least, we have the best staff and I love working with them. It’s great to hear people say they had a great experience with our students and staff.

What do you love about your industry?

This industry has taken me halfway around the world and I’ve met people who have become some of my best friends. Plus, it’s so cool to see something and transform it into a hairstyle. I love the world of business. It fascinates me to hear how other people have achieve success in their businesses.

What were you like as a kid?

I was a quiet kid in high school but I got along with everyone. I was an athlete and also played drums in a garage band for dances. I’ve always loved meeting people. That ability to make friends with anyone has helped me in my cosmetology career. Academically, I wasn’t a great student. I always share that with my students to let them know it’s never too late to get it to together.

What are you passionate about outside of work?

If I can take a vacation, it’s great to sit on a beach or a dock watching the water and letting my mind wander. Day to day, I love playing with my German Shepherds. If I have the time, I love going to sporting events. When I have time to read, I like short motivational and business books. In the past, I’ve attended Tony Robbins seminars which have improved both my business and personal life. However, family will always come first. I couldn’t have done any of this without my wife, Judi!
