Get to know Judi McKenzie, co-founder and educator at Z Hair Academy!

How long have you been in the cosmetology industry?

I’ve been in the industry since 1984! I went to beauty school right out of high school. And I’m so glad I did because it has been an amaZing career!

What inspired you to get into the hair and beauty industry?

It was just something I “felt” I would be good and and it seemed like a “fun” career and let’s face it, we are at work a lot, we might as well enjoy it.

What inspired you to start Z Hair Academy?

We had worked for many industry companies and schools. We wanted to put our own spin on things. We believed we had a lot of real-world information and experience to share. So we jumped in and did it!

What is the best thing about working at Z Hair Academy?

Education! Education! Education! We continually change our education platform to keep it fresh and modern to meet the needs of the ever-changing industry. We are a family of hair dressers sharing our knowledge with future professionals.

What do you love about your industry?

Cosmetology has given me the opportunity to do things, go places and meet people I could never have imagined. I truly LOVE what I do and love to share it with others. It is a Beautiful Business!

What was your childhood like?

I’m from a small town, so everything was about sports and small town stuff. My first job was in a record store. It was such a cool job (at the time). Music is an awesome reminder of our history. When you hear “that” song and it takes you back, you can still feel the connection.

What are you passionate about outside of work?

I love “trash to treasure”, so hunting for something that I can transform into something else makes my day. Garage sales, estate sales, thrift stores…wherever it may be, I love creating something cool!
