On September 14th, 2019, a group of Z Hair Academy faculty and students donated their hairstyling talents to the Kansas City Light The Night Walk event. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society holds Light The Night Walks in cities across North America to raise money in support of their mission: “to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.”
Family, friends, and co-workers of cancer patients gather to honor, encourage, or remember them. Many form teams to raise money for cancer research, collecting pledges to sponsor their walk. But Light The Night is more than a walk; it’s a celebration to lift up those touched by cancer. At the end of the walk, participants can enjoy music, fireworks, and booths with all sorts of fun.
When Z Hair Academy was asked to participate in Light The Night several years ago, we gladly accepted. We’ve happily provided special attention to those touched by cancer every year since. Z Hair Academy volunteers provide updos and braids for kids or basic services for adults.
“It is important for us to give what we can with our talents and time,” said Z Hair Academy co-founder and educator, Judi McKenzie. “If we can help people feel beautiful on the outside, it spreads to the inside as well.”
At Z Hair Academy, we love providing our services to such a fantastic event. It’s one of the small but important ways we strive to give back to our community. Each year our volunteers report leaving the event has received more than they gave!
