If you’re in need of financial aid, you have several grant and student loan options available to you. Take a look to find one that works for you!
The US government offers a variety of student aid, such as federal grants, work studies, and loans. If you’re ready to apply for federal aid, you must first complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
To receive federal student aid, you will need to:
In addition, you must (a) be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National, (b) have a Green Card, (c) have an Arrival-Departure Record, (d) have Battered Immigrant Status, or (e) have a T-VISA.

Once you’ve successfully submitted your FAFSA, you can start looking into your options for federal student aid. They fall into two categories: grants and student loans.
Federal Pell Grant
After your FAFSA is filed, you are automatically considered for a Pell Grant. As a grant, you receive the money with no requirement to repay it. Students must meet specific requirements to receive one. According to the Department of Education, grant amounts vary based on your expected family contribution, the cost of attendance, whether you are a full- or part-time student, and whether you attend school for a full academic year or less. To learn more about Federal Pell Grants, visit their website.
Student Loans
A variety of student loan options are available to you. Unlike grants, student loans accrue interest over time and must be repaid. Generally speaking, you have three main student loan options:
Direct Subsidized Loan
A Direct Subsidized Loan is a low-interest loan with a fixed interest rate in which the federal government pays the interest while the student is in school and during periods of authorized deferment.
Direct Unsubsidized Loan
A Direct Unsubsidized Loan is a low-interest loan with a fixed interest rate in which the student is responsible for the interest, and it accrues while in school, during the grace period and during periods of deferment and forbearance. It is not based on financial need.
Direct Parent Plus Loan
A Direct Parent Plus Loan is a Parent Loan for students. It enables parents with good credit histories to borrow money to pay for their child’s expenses.
