Tips and Tricks | Cosmetology School, Kansas CityModern Men’s Cuts

After a year in quarantine and Spring upon us, we are all due for a fresh haircut. Whether you want a simple trim or are ready to try an entirely new style, our stylists at the student salon within the Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Kansas City have detailed some modern men’s cuts to inspire you this season. Check them out below!

The Quintessential Quiff

The quiff has remained one of the most popular hairstyles throughout the past decades, appropriate for men of all age groups. Sported by James Dean, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Zac Efron, there is a reason that this style has endured the test of time. Generally shorter in the back and on the sides, the quiff maintains most of its length on top. The front sections of hair are swept up toward the back of the head to create the illusion of volume and add some shape. This style can be worn messy, polished, or natural and is super easy to maintain because no tapering is involved!

As if you’re not already sold on this quintessential quiff, it’s important to note that the longer front sections of hair help soften the appearance of a widow’s peak, and it takes little to no product to control. If you have naturally straight, thick hair, this style is for you. Embrace the movement—don’t fight it. To style a quiff:

  • Apply a styling product to damp hair (water-based mouse or pomade works best).
  • Use a blow dryer to dry your hair on a high-heat setting.
  • Brush the top of your hair back, using a round brush to create more volume.
  • Rub styling paste between your palms and fingers, and then run the product through the roots of your hair from the front to the back.
  • Seal the look with some light hairspray, or skip this step for a more natural finish.

The Bro Flow

With lockdown lingering into 2021, there has been a natural resurgence of the bro flow. This look has been modeled on celebrities like Timothée Chalamet, Adam Driver, and Milo Ventimiglia, begging the question, who can rock the bro flow? At the Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Kansas City, we believe if you’ve got the confidence to own it, that is all you need. Well, that, and some thick textured hair. If you have extremely fine hair, this cut may not be the optimal style for you since the hair may appear extra sparse.

When freshening up your style at the barbershop, ask for a round layer throughout, about four to five inches in length all over. If you want additional length, ask your stylist to reduce the weight on top and let the bottom layer continue to grow. Already convinced you want to try the bro flow this year? You still haven’t heard the best part about this natural-looking cut— you don’t have to style it. Simply wash and condition the hair before running some styling cream through it. Then, let it do its thing!

The Contemporary Crew Cut

Despite popular belief, the contemporary crew cut isn’t just a military hairstyle. The cut has become increasingly favorable as an everyday style among men due to its masculine appearance and easy-to-maintain nature. Not only is it practical, but it is incredibly versatile—cut it short or keep the hair on top longer for a more relaxed look. Opt for a parted crew cut with a tapered fade, a textured crew cut with scissored sides, or a comb-over crew cut with a complimenting beard. Draw inspiration from Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael B. Jordan, and Nick Jonas to decide which crew cut best fits your hair type. To style a lengthier crew cut:

  • Choose a suitable styling product (a medium-hold pomade for a structured look or a low shine product to show off natural texture).
  • Spread out the pomade throughout the hair and leave it mostly messy.
  • If you want to achieve a polished look, part your fringe to one side and set it in place with some additional pomade.
