Tips and Tricks | Cosmetology School Lee’s SummitDefining Your Bridal Style: Hair Edition

It’s finally your big day, the one time in your life when all eyes will be on you. Whether you’ve been dreaming about this day since you were a young girl or just now reconciling with the idea of getting married, there’s no doubt you want every detail of your wedding to be picturesque, especially your hair. If you’re still torn between a dazzling updo or cascading curls, worry not. Our stylists at the student salon within the Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, have provided tutorials for our favorite wedding season styles to get you inspired. Check them out below!

The below tutorials are provided in articles from BridalMusings.com and MarthaStewart.com.

Timeless Chignon

There is nothing more timeless than an elegant chignon. The word originates from the French phrase “chignon du cou,” which translates to the nape of the neck and dates back to ancient Greece, where Athenian women sported the style with gold or ivory hairpins. Recreate this classic big-day look to flatter your neckline and accentuate the details on your impeccable dress. It’s literally the hairstyle of gods and goddesses! To achieve this classic look:

  1. Add a dime-sized amount of frizz-fighting serum to your fingers (our stylists at the Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Lee’s Summit recommend Joico’s K-PAK Luster Lock Glossing Oil) and run the product through your hair.
  2. Once you have evenly distributed the styling product throughout your hair, use a paddle brush or a tail comb to make a deep side part. Brush your hair thoroughly to make it appear extra glossy!
  3. Pick up a one-inch section of hair in the front of your head, roll it around two fingers, and clip it for five minutes.
  4. Remove the clip and gently pull the previously rolled section of hair back along the hairline, incorporating sections from the right and left sides (each section one to three inches wide) and overlapping as you go.
  5. Secure the back of the head with bobby pins. Continue pulling back sections from the right and left, and loop the ends into a relaxed bun.
  6. Secure the final bun with additional bobby pins to party all night!

Flattering French Twist

A French twist is one of the most versatile updos. Style it with some fresh flowers to create a bohemian vibe, or add some diamond hairpins for a classic vintage style. Whichever you choose, you are sure to impress your guests with a hairstyle that perfectly complements your gown and shows off your beautiful face. Somebody grab the camera; we are ready to capture this stunning look! To achieve this flattering style:

  1. Add a volumizer to your damp hair, and blow-dry it with a round brush. For additional body, spray a lightweight texturizer throughout the hair. Our favorite is the Joico Hair Shake Liquid-To-Powder Texturizing Finisher!
  2. Sweep the hair into a low ponytail, about an inch or two away from the nape of the neck. Secure the ponytail with a clear band.
  3. Grasp some smaller pieces of hair from the middle of the ponytail, holding them steady while sliding the elastic band up toward your head with the other hand. This will help create some additional volume.
  4. Position one hand at the center of the back of your head with your fingers pointing down. Use your other hand to wrap the ponytail around your index and middle fingers to form a twist.
  5. Secure the twist with large bobby pins and snip the clear elastic band with some scissors. Be extremely careful not to clip your hair accidentally!
  6. Loosen small strands of hair around the sides of your head and face to create an imperfect and natural look.
  7. Apply some firm-hold hairspray and enjoy!

Vintage Curls

If you aspire to look like the classic bombshell brides of the past or have outlined a clear vintage theme for your wedding, consider opting for vintage curls to add an extra touch of glamour to your wedding day style. Not only will these curls pair well with any dress, adding the perfect touch of elegance to your special day, but they are timeless and universally flattering. Whether you have long, luscious locks, or short, fine hair, you are sure to confidently rock this style all the way down the aisle! To achieve these picturesque vintage curls:

  1. With a paddle brush or tail comb, create a defined side part.
  2. Using a large barrel or wand, curl your hair inwards towards the face, clipping the hair in place with flat, setting clips.
  3. Leave the curls to cool for 15 minutes, and then gently brush the curls to “blend” them together.
  4. For curls higher up on your head and around your forehead, curl smaller sections toward the front.
  5. Spray a light layer of hair spray and add some fun accessories!
