If you’re an avid plucker or have never undergone a face wax or brow wax before, you may not be familiar with the recommended preparation. Generally, your esthetician will prefer that your face is free of cuts and blemishes if at all possible and will recommend that you do not over-exfoliate your face before treatment. This could lead to more aggravated skin that becomes more sensitive to waxing. Additionally, clients can better prepare for their next waxing appointment by practicing the following:

• If you have previously plucked or shaved any area that is being waxed, whether eyebrows, chin, or lip area, allow sufficient time for growth so that the waxing will work properly. Our stylists at the Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Lawrence recommend a hair length between 1/4 and 1/2 inches for optimal results.
• Stop using any acid products or skin peels three to four days before your waxing appointment to help prevent post-waxing skin irritation.
• Use a regular cleanser in the days leading up to your appointment to ensure any build-up is removed.
• Moisturize well the night before your appointment for better results!

When you arrive at the salon for your waxing appointment, a professional esthetician will begin heating the wax before using a knife or spatula to spread it across the desired area of hair removal. Once the wax has been laid down, they will lay a fabric strip on top of the wax and press it into place to ensure all of the desired hairs are covered. At this point, your esthetician will gently remove the waxing strip at a 45-degree angle, pulling away from the hair follicles in the opposite direction to hair growth. This will help remove the hair directly from the root and delay any regrowth. Most professionals are trained in multiple facial areas, including eyebrows, the upper lip, chin, and sideburn areas, with the process remaining the same for all of these areas!

While many perceive waxing to be more painful than traditional plucking or shaving, waxing offers many added benefits that will save you time and money in the future, and is relatively painless! Some of these benefits include:

Less Regrowth—Typical waxing results last anywhere from two to six weeks depending on an individual’s hair growth and can actually prevent hair from growing back after long-term treatment. Each time you go to the salon for a wax, the removal of hair follicles can eventually result in termination of regrowth altogether. If you do experience regrowth, you may notice that these hairs are much finer and less visible in appearance.

Increased Precision—Waxing is not only great for targeting large surface areas like the sides of the face, but waxing also allows for your esthetician to be precise. When it comes to smaller areas around the eyebrows, waxing allows for intricacy when achieving your perfect shape. It also remains much more effective at removing dead skin cells from the brow area and preventing ingrown hairs or bumps from arising!
