There’s nothing more festive than hot chocolate, holiday shopping, Christmas parties, and, most importantly—holiday makeup! The holiday season is the only time of year you can rock extravagant and bold makeup looks any day of the week and get away with it. While it’s no secret that holiday essentials like bright red lipstick and smoldering eyeliner are timeless makeup looks, there are some simple and easy ways to transform and modernize your makeup looks so you can sleigh the season. This year, our stylists at the Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Overland Park, Kansas, have detailed some seasonal makeup tips that will keep you looking amazing through the New Year!
Winter is the season to sparkle! From shimmery eyeshadows and pearlescent highlighters to rhinestone face jewels and glistening lipstick, now is the time to experiment with all things glitter. Whether you’re an avid glitter-wearer or you have yet to try out the sparkly pigments, this year is about embracing intense eyeshadows. It’s no surprise that bold lipsticks are taking a back seat, as wearing a mask makes the task of applying lipstick rather tricky. This is why we are focusing on the eyes to ensure a standout look. Our stylists at the Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Overland Park recommend working with liquid glitter eyeshadows and pressed pigment glitters for an intense and bold effect!
Experience the true joys of winter with a snow-inspired makeup look. Frosty eyelids are a gorgeous contrast for those with deeper skin tones and complement light and cool-toned complexions, making it a fashion-forward choice for ringing in the New Year. To achieve this look, use a shimmery white or silver shade and pack it across the entire lid, subtly blending it outward toward the brow bone. For an added pop, consider applying an eye gloss on top of your eyeshadow to create a frosty and glossy look that lasts all night. Pair this bright shadow with a nude or understated lip to let your eyes be the focus of this winter-inspired makeup.
There’s nothing more indicative of holiday makeup than red lipstick. This year, we’re putting a modern spin on this classic color story and embracing the oxblood lips, a deeper and more plum version of the traditional red. If you are a lover of dark lipstick but feel that black is a little too reminiscent of Halloween rather than the holidays, you are sure to love this shade as you can achieve the same intensity. For the smoothest-looking application and most long-lasting wear time, prepare your lips by exfoliating them and applying a lip balm prior to your lipstick application. Additionally, make sure to line your lips with an equally intense lip liner to avoid a blotted or dulled appearance!
Level up your traditional wing liner with a smoldering bottom liner. Use a black coal liner to accentuate both the outer and inner corners of your bottom lash line and create a seamless transition with your wing liner. Our stylists at the Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Overland Park recommend keeping your lower eyeliner thin and inconspicuous to avoid creating an impression of dark under-eye circles. Use the side of your eyeliner rather than pressing down on the tip, and remember to blend the eyeliner into your lash line at the edges so that it looks naturally defined. If you begin to notice that your liner is making your eyes appear dull, stop blending and start cleaning your liner up with some concealer!
Rouge is in this holiday season! Warm up your face with some berry-inspired blush shades. While applying blush may seem like a basic step of your everyday makeup, this step is often overlooked and can transform your entire look. To be sure that your blush is not overly intense, remember to shake any extra powder from your brush before applying it to the tops of your cheekbones and down to the apples of your cheeks. If you have found that you have gone too dark or intense with your holiday blush, soften the hue by applying a light layer of translucent powder to blend out the color.
