If you’ve ever tried growing out your hair, you know that frequent haircuts are your friend, but how long is too long to wait between trims? While many clients keep appointments every six weeks, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to your hair growth! Depending on your texture, style, and length, the frequency you cut your hair for optimal health will vary. Our stylists at the Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Kansas City, Missouri, have experience cutting clients with all different lengths of hair and have detailed when you should cut your hair according to its type. A general rule of thumb for trimming your hair is scheduling an appointment every three to seven weeks for shorter styles like buzz cuts, bobs, and pixies. If you have a specific style with sharp bangs, you will likely need to maintain a three-week schedule to ensure your hair continues to look precise and polished. Because hair grows on average one-half an inch per month, frequent trims are essential in maintaining your shape and style. But, if you aren’t concerned about a bit of growth and are more relaxed with your look, you can stretch this time between cuts to seven weeks to save yourself some time and money!
If you have shoulder-length locks, you probably enjoy the benefits of less maintenance and fewer salon appointments than your short-haired counterparts. Clients with hair that ends slightly above the shoulders often opt for a trim once the hair begins to brush the shoulders, about every eight weeks. If your hair is healthy and relatively undamaged, our stylists at the Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Kansas City recommend scheduling trims every three to four months to touch up layers and eliminate split ends!
Longer hairstyles still require regular maintenance! No matter your style, once your hair has grown out for longer than three months without a trim, it will completely lose its shape. It’s also important to consider that the longer your hair is, the older it is, and the more fragile it is. Because of this, long hair is more susceptible to breakage, split ends, and a thinner appearance. Once you notice that your layers begin to disappear or find that the middle of your hair is fuller than usual, schedule a snip! About three months between haircuts is recommended, or as little as eight weeks if you’re in the process of growing your hair out.
