Tips and Tricks | Cosmetology School Overland ParkTake-Home Tips for Defining Your Curls

Do you want to flaunt your natural curls every day but can never seem to manage the perfect style once you leave the salon? Because everybody’s curls are different and should be styled accordingly, achieving the perfect style and routine for your specific curls may be difficult. Our stylists at the Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Overland Park, Kansas, work with clients of all hair types daily and have detailed some take-home tips for defining your curls outside the salon. Learn more below!

Apply Products to Wet Hair

The best way to ensure well-defined, frizz-free curls is to keep your hair well moisturized. This includes applying your products to wet hair immediately after stepping out of the shower! While it’s beneficial to squeeze any excess water out of your curls before applying product, remember not to towel dry. Apply your styling products directly onto your wet hair to lock in the style and help your curls clump together. Our stylists at the Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Overland Park recommend using a paddle brush or combing with your fingers as you work the product throughout your hair. While doing this, allow your curls to define themselves and fall naturally.

Detangle and Define

Once your styling products and leave-in conditioner are applied to your hair, continue detangling and defining your curls. How your hair begins to dry is how it will continue to look once completely dried, so it’s important to define your curls while your hair is still damp and fresh with the product. Avoid frizz by using a microfiber hair towel to absorb the water quickly and reduce damage. If you don’t have a microfiber hair towel at home, you can also use a cotton t-shirt to soak up the excess water without disturbing the curls!

Allow Hair To Air Dry

When it’s time to dry your hair, it’s best practice to let it air dry if you have enough time. The less heat you apply to your hair, the less frizz you will notice because your hair will retain moisture better. If you don’t have ample time to air dry your hair, our team suggests using a diffuser attachment on a low heat setting. Move the blow dryer around your head quickly and stop before the curls are dried all the way through. Once you reach this point, let your curls air dry the rest of the way, and avoid touching or brushing them, as this can cause additional frizz and create a tangled mess!
