When it comes to coloring your hair, there are two main types of hair color: permanent and demi-permanent. But what’s the difference between the two, and how do you know which one to choose? Today, our stylists at the Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Lawrence, Kansas, are taking a closer look at permanent vs. demi-permanent hair color. Learn more below!
Permanent hair color is designed to provide long-lasting results, permanently altering the color of clients’ hair. It consists of a combination of ammonia and hydrogen peroxide to open up the cuticle of the hair and deposit color into the cortex. The process can be used to lighten or darken your natural hair color, depending on the color chosen, and can provide full gray coverage. Due to its permanent nature, the color won’t fade or wash out, and it will remain vibrant for several weeks before requiring regular touch-ups.
Demi-permanent hair color is designed to partially penetrate the hair shaft and deposit color into the cuticle layer. Because it doesn’t contain ammonia but contains a small amount of hydrogen peroxide to activate the color, it will gradually fade over time, usually lasting between four and six weeks. While demi-permanent hair color is an excellent option if you’re not ready to commit to a new hair color fully, it is also less damaging to your hair than permanent hair color, as it won’t open up the cuticle layer as much. Our stylists at the Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Lawrence love demi-permanent hair color because it’s a great way to enhance your natural hair without drastically changing it!
The decision between permanent and demi-permanent hair color ultimately comes down to your individual needs and preferences! If you are looking for a long-lasting color that provides full gray coverage and requires minimal touch-ups, permanent hair color may be the best option for you. However, if you’re looking for a potentially less damaging option that’s a minor commitment, then demi-permanent hair color may be the way to go. Before making any final decisions, consult with your stylist, as they can help you determine which type of hair color is best for your hair type and condition!
