Why did you choose to attend Z Hair Academy?

When I was touring different schools, the Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Overland Park was the first one I walked into and felt at home. Choosing a cosmetology school can be difficult, especially with multiple options in our area.

The first reason I chose Z Hair was because they weren’t brand-specific. They brought in different educators from all facets of the cosmetology world, and the student kit can’t be beat! To this day, I still use the tools I received seven years ago. This gives you such an advantage when beginning your career, having stellar tools to hit the ground running behind the chair. They also helped me develop a goal-setting mentality. There is always something to work towards and challenge yourself with.

Where do you currently work?

I currently work at Roots and Branches Salon in the River Market area downtown. I have been at this salon since 2021 and loved every second of it. I rent my chair and enjoy having a salon atmosphere and the camaraderie with other stylists. We’re able to see each other’s work and learn from one another every day.

What advice would you give to a new student?

You did it, taking the first step toward an incredibly rewarding career! Try not to compare yourself to anyone else; you are what matters. The amount of focus and drive you put into your education will return tenfold. I was a massage therapist for seven years before changing my career path. It was the best decision I ever made! You got this! It’s a Z Thing!

How has Z Hair Academy helped further your career?

When I have been present in conversations about hiring prospective cosmetologists and they are a graduate of Z Hair Academy, they are immediately put on top of the list. The reputation Z Hair Academy has built is such a positive one and will give you an advantage when looking for your dream salon.

What do you do in your spare time?

I live in downtown Kansas City, so I enjoy the local vendor pop-ups on the weekends and exploring the parks around the city. Occasionally, my husband and I like to escape the city and visit the mountains in Colorado or the woods in Arkansas.

What is your favorite hair product?

I really like Kevin Murphy Un.Tangled; It’s a great detangler and works well as a cutting lotion.

What do you wish you knew when you were a student?

The first salon I applied to did not hire me, and it was a gut punch to my self-confidence. I felt I had done everything right to guarantee myself a job after graduation. I decided to reach out to one of my instructors, and they reminded me that it didn’t matter where I worked; just GO DO HAIR! Start doing what you love, and everything else will fall into place. She was right.
