Why did you choose to attend Z Hair Academy?

I just moved up from my small town and knew I wanted to attend somewhere great! The Z Hair Academy cosmetology school in Overland Park was unique, and when I walked in, I just knew I was home! I am so grateful for my decision; I couldn’t be happier and feel very lucky to know all the talented women who have continued to help me succeed to this day!

Where do you currently work?

I am working at Sublime Society Salon in Olathe as a master stylist. I’m happy to be able to help make key business decisions—we’ve been open for a month and couldn’t have asked for a better turnout!

What advice would you give to a new student?

Do what you love, and don’t be afraid of change. Change is good for growth—whether that’s you or the hair trends that are evolving! Don’t be afraid of failure. If you keep going, then you really didn’t fail. Sometimes, things don’t turn out how you wanted or expected; that’s okay, and EVERYONE has been there, even if you don’t think so! It’s beautiful to look back and see all those mistakes that you’ve learned from! Lastly, don’t be afraid of fear. You will get nervous and scared at times in the industry… whether that’s from clients, hair not turning out how you wanted, or just being scared of new clients. Everything happens for a reason, and you need to trust that!

How has Z Hair Academy helped further your career?

Z Hair Academy has given me so many educational tools and real-world experience working on the floor. Even though I was technically in school, I was working and doing what I do now! They definitely helped set me up for success!

What do you do in your spare time?

It depends on the day, but recently, I’ve been getting ready for my son, who I’ll be delivering in March!

What is your favorite hair product?

IGK and Shibui have been my favorite brands so far! I love the IGK Beach Club Texture Spray and the Shibui Volumizing Mousse!

What do you wish you knew when you were a student?

I wish I knew it was more than just me and my client—the specific hair type is such a big factor. That may sound silly, and while you can listen to exactly what your client wants, it’s the hair that will ultimately make it happen. Pregnancy, medication, and other factors can actually cause certain hair types to react differently!
