Summer is full of pools, oceans, sun exposure, frequent shampoos, sunscreen, and humidity. Many leave summer feeling that their hair is more dry, brittle, dull, and just not as healthy as the beginning of the season. This is completely normal.
Now that fall is around the corner, it is the perfect time for a hair reset! The new season is ideal to evaluate the condition of your hair and plan a recovery routine to get your healthy locks back to where they were!
As a student in a cosmetology school, this is a great opportunity to use your skills and knowledge to help your guest regain their confidence through the health of their hair.
So, what exactly happened to your hair over the summer?
Before you come up with solutions to help restore your guest’s hair, we must figure out what happened to it.
Summer exposes your hair to chlorine, saltwater, UV rays, heat, sunscreen, ponytails, and increased shampoos. All these things contribute to color fading, dry and brittle hair, and just a different feeling overall.
Oftentimes, leaving summer, the hair will look dry and split ends will be present. This means a trim might be the best place to start.
A trim will help the ends look healthier as well as fuller while also preventing split ends from traveling further up the hair shaft. For the ultimate haircut refresh, add a conditioning treatment to the service!
While a dramatic cut will create the biggest change, a small trim can create smooth and healthy hair.
After neglecting your hair over the summer, it will crave moisture.
A regular deep conditioning treatment can be a great addition to an at home fall routine, as well as other products. Consider your haircare routine to include a hydrating shampoo and conditioner, a deep conditioner weekly or biweekly, a lightweight serum for your ends, and always a heat protectant before heat styling.
Many guests assume that protein is the answer. Remember that too much protein is a bad thing. Excess protein can cause the hair to become more brittle, so check your products. Focus on moisture and hydration and put keratin and protein to the side.
Every season is an opportunity to adjust your color.
Many guests will add some depth, deepness, or warmth to their color for the fall. These colors can add the shine that their hair may be missing while giving their hair a break from the side effects that come with constant lightening.
Some common services to recommend to your guest going into fall include lowlights, an all over color, or a gloss.
A lowlight can add that dimension that guests crave for fall. An all over color will add an all over deepness. And lastly, a gloss will hydrate the hair and add shine while offering a tone and/or level shift.
Adjusting your guests’ color can make the world of a difference.
Here is the ultimate fall checklist for maximum hair health;
Get a trim. Do them regularly.
Do a biweekly conditioning treatment.
Add some essentials to your home routine to restore moisture.
Refresh your color.
Consult with your guests to give them the best results.
