Uncategorized | Cosmetology schoolHow to Create an Excellent Client Experience: And Why it Matters

As someone building their career in cosmetology school, it is easy to believe that your success will be dependent on how good your skills are in producing hair.

Your technical skills do matter. But creating a successful career as a cosmetologist includes much more than the final result. Sure, clients will remember the result they left with, but more importantly they will remember how they felt when they were sitting in your chair.

The client experience starts before you begin your guest’s hair and continues far after they leave your chair.

You do not have to be an experienced stylist to ensure an excellent client experience. Cosmetology school is the perfect time to practice nailing the guest experience.

Before the Appointment

An excellent client experience starts before your client even sits in your chair. Use your social media to make it easy for potential guests to find you, check out your portfolio, and book with you. After your guest books and before they arrive at their appointment, get to the salon before your guest and be ready to go. Take a few minutes to prepare your station, gather the tools and products you’ll need, and make sure your workspace is clean and organized.

Being prepared will improve your confidence. You will not always know what to expect during an appointment so being set up properly will make your appointment smoother for both you and your guest.

During the Appointment

Ensure that you really listen during your consultation. Consider facing your guest, listening to their wishes, asking questions for clarity, and most importantly, providing realistic expectations. Do not be afraid to suggest an alternative service that might suit your guest better.

Throughout the appointment, pay attention to the comfort of your guest. Have peaceful music playing, keep their hair out of their face, offer snacks and drinks, and check in with them often.

Every guest will tell you that the best part of the appointment is the shampoo. Create a relaxing shampoo by giving a tranquil scalp massage, ensuring the shampoo bowl is comfortable, keeping their clothing dry, and finding other ways to cater to your guests.

After the Appointment

After you complete your guest’s hair, show them their hair. Talk them through what you did and give them time to tell you how they like it. If they want adjustments, kindly explain their options to them.

Walk your guests through how to maintain their hair at home. Explain the proper products to maintain their color. Explain the proper tools and process to style their hair the way they desire. And lastly recommend to your guest when to come back to see you and offer to rebook them.

The Little Things Matter

Creating an excellent client experience does not have to mean going over the top. It is about doing small things to make your guest feel comfortable and cared for. This industry is about connection and community.

Yes, your technical skills might get someone in your chair, but the client experience is what will keep them.
